Last night we took the kids to Nassau Coliseum to see How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular. The live production rolls fire-breathing action, epic adventure and heartfelt laughter into an original captivating story set in the mythical world of Vikings and wild dragons.
Based on the book by Cressida Cowell (and there’s also a movie…I wasn’t aware!), it centers on Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view. The show was absolutely amazing! The size of the was dragons jaw dropping…they blink, they walk, they breathe smoke and fire and they fly overhead. My kids were vacillating between staring speechless in awe and chattering rapidly sounding like this:
That’s a fake dragon. Are these real dragons? Is that a real dragon? There’s not really a lot of dragons. I’m not even afraid mom. Are you?
I’ve never seen an audience so excited and awe-struck but it’s understandable given the amazing talent and special effects. The actors demonstrated superb skills with dance moves and gymnastics. (My daughter, the gymnast, kept squealing about the amazing flips she saw).
But the special effects were really breath-taking. Hiccup started the show off by traveling up a huge vertical wall which contained imagery projected onto the wall.
This gave the illusion of him running on a path, leaping and even falling down a cliff among the trees. There had to be hundreds of people working behind the scene to pull this off so seamlessly.
The show has many more dates ahead. Tickets are available now and may be purchased through the arena Box Offices, by going to Ticketmaster.com or calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000. Check out all the details and other show dates and venues here: http://dreamworksdragonslive.com/
